A Hike to Remember

The Death Hike

This weekend Kyle, Wendy, and I
decided to blaze our own trail up a mountain.
The first sign of trouble was when, 3 feet in front of me,
I spied a snake ready to strike at me.
It was rattlin' its tail somethin' fierce and did not look happy.

As we hiked higher and higher the path got steeper and there were more and more thorns and more patches of stinging nettle. Kyle was wearing shorts and was having a bit of trouble but Wendy pressed on.

Once we at lunch at the top we started look for a "nice path down". Such a path did not exist. The mountain began to drop faster and faster and Kyle and I hung on for dear life. Meanwhile Wendy down below said "Ooo look berries!" and started munching on some wild plants.

And so the three of us slid 6000 feet down the mountain...

By the time we got to the bottom we were dirty. We were also locked in a gated community so we had to climb a few fences to get out. On the walk to bus Wendy tried to steal apples from private land but was unsuccessful. On the bus people were laughing at our torn and filthy pants.

Safe at home we showered away our filth in time for a birthday party. Our shoes may never recover...

The rule of 55

Part I: Preparing for the Trip
195 days to Almaty

Today I wanted to do some research on Almaty to help me get an idea of what it will be like living there. I also wanted to practice my math skills since I will be teaching math to middle schoolers. Here’s what I found so far. The population of Almaty is about 1.4 million people. Comparatively, the Stevens Point, Wisconsin population is about 25,000 people. This means that Almaty is about 55 times larger than Stevens Point. Here is what I was able to deduce so far from this information.

Since Stevens Point has 3 McDonalds, Almaty must have about 160 McDonalds

Stevens Point has 20 developed parks, therefore Almaty must have around 1,100 developed parks

Stevens Point has over 75 bars, therefore Almaty must have over 4,000 bars

Stevens Point is made up of 93% White, therefore Almaty must be 5115% White

Stevens Point’s Trivia Contest is 54 hours long, Almaty’s Trivia contest must be 2970 hours long

Furthermore Almaty must have 55 Walmarts, 55 Belt’s Ice Creams, 55 Mayors, 55 models of the 2713 train engine, and 55 Green Circles.

Well I can’t wait to learn more about Almaty, Kazakhstan! I’ll keep you posted!
